World Water Works: Integrated Approach for Efficient Effluent Treatment

Municipalities and diverse industries that process wastewater on a thousand million gallons-per day scale have their hands tied. A number of regulations are in place to ensure appropriate treatment, which is performed through distinct processes. The demand for various processes stems from the fact that effluents include multiple components that pollute clean water. This need presents a dilemma, as necessary equipment is expensive and requires engaging multiple vendors for specific procedures- a common hurdle that both industries and municipalities share. This is where worldwaterworks makes a difference for industries and municipalities, enabling them through affordable and superior integrated wastewater treatment solutions.

Chandler Johnson, CTO at World Water Works, says, “The key differentiator is that we are a holistic and integrated solution provider.”

World Water Works is a major innovator in wastewater treatment with over 22 years of experience. The company is a solution provider offering a combination of separation and biological technology services. World Water Works’ solutions are not off the-shelf technologies. Their approach evaluates the existing systems of the client, and then provides appropriate solutions and training to ensure efficient results and seamless operation of their technologies.

World Water Works’ solutions cater to industrial and municipal facilities based on the complexity of wastewater treatment and the effluent limits needing to obtain.

On the industrial side, World Water Works’ Ideal EQ system with pH control and their dissolved air floatation (DAF) systems are primary requirements for most clients. An example of its application is in the food industry to remove fats, oils, and grease (FOG). When biological treatment is required, the company’s moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) is the equipment of choice. Their most recent incorporation is the multi-disk screw press used for dewatering.
In one instance, a dairy facility needed to reduce its biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). For phase one, World Water Works implemented an EQ tank, DAF, and dewatering system, which successfully eliminated BOD, suspended solids, and FOG. To further enhance the system, the company later integrated two MBBR reactors as part of the project’s second phase, which significantly reduces the BOD from 4,000 mg/L to 200 mg/L, effectively minimizing the impact on the municipal wastewater treatment plant.

On the municipal level, World Water Works provides two anammox technologies DEMON and PdNA (Partial deNitrification Anammox) designed to treat both side streams with elevated ammonia levels and mainstream wastewater to aid in reducing power and carbon requirements to achieve low effluent TN levels. The company’s gravimetric selection system, inDENSE, increases hydraulic throughput of a wastewater plant by allowing for operating at higher mixed liquor concentrations maintaining low SVI’s. inDENSE is used, along with BIOCOS and integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) technology offered by the company.
  • The key differentiator is that we are a holistic and integrated solution provider.

World Water Works was able to help DC Water, a municipality, reduce their sidestream high strength ammonia load with DEMON technology. As a facility that treats 365 million gallons a day, meeting the regulatory limit of 3 mg/L of Total Nitrogen requires extensive investment in blower capacity and methanol. Through their solutions, World Water Works will save up to $6 million in methanol costs per year for the client.

“We have been in business for 22 years and have stood behind each technology and project,” says Johnson.

World Water Works has a remarkable reputation, and its competence reflects in its numerous success stories that stand as a testament to its excellence. By helping industries and municipalities perfect their wastewater treatment systems in regulation compliance, World Water Works is undoubtedly playing a crucial role in beneficial wastewater treatment.
