New Age Solutions for Sludge Treatment

Graziano Lagreca, the founder of Teknofanghi, identified a significant loophole in wastewater treatment processes, where sludge disposal is still disregarded as a problem. Despite focusing on efficient ways to treat effluents, Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs) fail to acknowledge the importance of sludge disposal and its wide-ranging impact on the economy and the environment. This particular cause motivated Lagreca to spearhead a project of developing technologies for an efficient sludge handling process.

With years of experience and technical competence, Teknofanghi gave birth to its first patent—the TEKNOBAG-DRAIMAD, the best-in-class bag dewatering system in the market. This led to the emergence of other technologies and innovative machines for sludge handling. Teknofanghi assures a constant presence in clients’ operation centers, from consultation to after-sales services. Teknofanghi helps municipal and industrial WWTPs efficiently dewater the sludge, thereby reducing sludge volume and the pressure on the disposal plants.

“Teknofanghi, apart from thickening and dewatering sludge, thanks to its microfiltration systems, also helps to recover precious resources such as the filtrate that can be recirculated in plants and treated for possible reuse,” mentions Eleonora Giupponi, Sales engineer of Teknofanghi.

Kickstarting their journey in 1987, Teknofanghi used its bag dewatering system for treating sludge in small plants, such as WWTPs, resorts, and industrial plants; the heart of the dewatering system is the unique filter bag. The second best known machine is the MONOBELT, a compact combination of two distinct and integrated units: a pre-thickener and a belt press. Teknofanghi’s SCRUDRAIN is the dynamic thickener with an internal Archimedean screw that can be installed upstream of any other sludge dewatering machine; it is a simple and inexpensive solution to sludge thickening.

Teknofanghi also added its latest sludge dewatering machine called SCRUPRESS, a screw press with a wedge wire drum and an internal screw for drainage, thickening, and dewatering of sludge.

Finally, Teknofanghi has its continuous microfiltration system, the SCRUFILTER. It is a microfiltration system with a filtering drum divided into panels and an internal open screw which reduces the concentration of suspended solids present in the water, thereby lowering the presence of chemical compounds like COD, BOD5, and phosphates, nitrates, and more. Moreover, Teknofanghi uses manual or automatic POLYDILUTION to optimize the sludge dewatering process to prepare the necessary polyelectrolyte.

With the utmost attention to reducing environmental impact, all Teknofanghi’s machines are easy to manage and maintain, thus lowering investments and costs for customers. The SCRUPRESS and SCRUFILTER decrease washing water consumption and reuse filtered water for washing, respectively. For instance, over a decade ago, a pharmaceutical company contacted Teknofanghi to replace their old sludge treatment system, which was underperforming and no longer able to generate satisfying treatment results and cater to the management’s requirements. It was a large production plant where active ingredients were extracted from plants and natural products. After various inspections and sludge analyses, Teknofanghi’s MONOBELT belt filter press was proposed, including accessories such as a powder-based POLYDILUTION. With high levels of dryness at the outlet, it was possible to reduce the sludge volumes considerably. Besides assuring the ease of operation, maintenance, and affordable management expenses, it also provided a versatile technology to deal with significant variations in the types of matrices to be treated (depending on the plant’s production, which is not always constant).
