Today, as temperature extremes caused by climate change continue to affect multiple business sectors across Europe, governments are placing an enhanced emphasis on leveraging greener technologies and operational strategies that drive sustainable growth. And with the significance of being an environmentally-conscious nation increasing with each passing day, construction companies are replacing traditional processes for wastewater management with innovative solutions and services that can help minimise their carbon footprint. In Greece, for instance, the national wastewater management infrastructure has undergone significant technological advancements over the last five years, bringing the country’s overall waste management capabilities on par with other European countries. And at the heart of bringing Greece’s environmental efforts to bear is TEDRA group.

Founded in 1989, TEDRA initially offered construction services for buildings and industrial projects. Subsequently, the company invested in new activities and focused on environmental infrastructure projects, such as sewerage networks and wastewater treatment plants. Today, TEDRA Group specialises in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of technical and environmental projects, advanced technology management, wastewater management and utilisation.

The company utilises the reliability and creativity of its human resources, environmental awareness and business ethos to improve human life in a balanced natural environment. TEDRA’s services are divided into two categories: the technical and environmental. “We recognise the impact that inefficient wastewater treatment could have on the health of a plethora of natural ecosystems, and therefore offer our portfolio to assist clients in adopting a greener wastewater treatment and management process,” says Giannis Tolios, president and CEO at TEDRA.

Delving deeper into TEDRA’s portfolio, Tolios elaborates on how its technical department specialises in the design, study, construction, and maintenance of public and private projects. These services are backed by a three-decade journey where TEDRA constructed several sewage and hydraulic networks, industrial and residential buildings, roads and sports facilities across Greece. On the other hand, the company also promotes the transition to a circular economy model as part of its environmental services, which drives greener waste management processes that are profitable for entrepreneurs and have a positive environmental footprint. “We undertake the entire process of manufacturing an aerobic or anaerobic wastewater treatment plant, from fully covering the requirements of a licensing to the operation and maintenance of the plant,” explains Tolios.

Furthermore, to enhance the collection and transportation of municipal and industrial solid, non-hazardous waste based on the European Waste Catalogue (EWC), which has been a prevalent environmental challenge, TEDRA provides its specialised personnel with a proprietary fleet of vehicles and construction machinery. After the waste is collected, FERTECH PRODUCTION, a ground-breaking unit of the group, receives and manages incoming organic, non-hazardous waste and turns it into granular fertiliser that is processed with state-of-the-art equipment. “Following this, the enriched fertiliser is sold through FERTILIS TRADE, which is the fertiliser supply and distribution arm of our company,” adds Tolios.

With such unmatched capabilities, TEDRA has ignited several client success stories since its inception. In one instance, the company assisted the BIZIOS SA Dairy Industry in constructing their standard wastewater anaerobic treatment plant. During this project, TEDRA offered services for the construction, installation, and operation of the wastewater treatment plant. Concurrently, TEDRA leveraged its long-running partnership with Veolia, a global leader in resource management, and applied their Memthane® technology within BIZIOS SA’s dairy. “With the Memthane® technology, we aimed to remove the polluting load of the waste of the dairy industry, in accordance with environmental legislation, while reducing the company's environmental footprint,” states Tolios. Additionally, the technology offers many advantages, including less space, lower disposal costs and high energy biogas production that can replace fossil fuels while offering a significant reduction in overall operating costs compared to conventional technologies. This project was nationally distinguished with the Products & Services Award 2020 in the European Business Awards for the Environment 2020, organised by the Greek Association of Environmental Protection Companies (PASEPPE) on behalf of the European Commission.

The project with BIZIOS SA stands as a reference point for the efficacy of the Memthane® technology in wastewater treatment, and TEDRA plans to capitalise on its success to promote its services across the 1000+ F&B companies across Greece. And with its unique vertical operating strategy, the company aims to always respond to the urgent need for sustainable solutions that can mitigate the prevalent environmental challenges. Looking ahead, TEDRA plans to utilise its status as a strong supporter of the corporate social responsibility initiative to continue undertaking actions to address social issues through collaborations with educational institutions, donations, sponsorships and corporate volunteering.
