Funding smart grid technology: Computer processing, control systems, and two-way communication technologies have made smart grid technology possible. Operators can assess grid stability using advanced sensors known as Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), advanced digital meters that provide consumers with more information and automatically report outages, relays that recognize and recover from faults in substations automatically, automated feeder switches that reroute power around problems, and batteries that store excess energy to meet customer needs. Operators can quickly detect problems and take action to correct them. For example, PMUs can detect disturbances before they become bigger problems, allowing operators to take preventive action. Similarly, automated feeder switches can reroute power around problems, keeping power on and preventing outages. A battery can store excess energy and make it available when needed, ensuring a reliable power supply.

New technology: When an underground fault or single loss of source occurs on an underground residential loop, certain automated systems automatically locate and isolate the fault and reroute power from an alternate source—all within 60 seconds. This intelligent system reduces the impact of sustained outages that commonly last for hours. It eliminates the need for immediate crew intervention, keeping power on until the underlying issue can be resolved. The automatic isolation of faults also greatly simplifies locating faults on underground residential circuits and reduces medium-voltage exposure for crews. Furthermore, the devices do not need programming, firmware updates, computers, internet connectivity, batteries, radios, or antennas. This makes fault detection and isolation much faster and safer for crews since they do not have to manually locate and isolate the fault. The devices are easy to install and use since they do not require any programming or additional components.

Artificial intelligence: Beyond Limits is an industrial AI company that develops hybrid AI solutions by combining data and expert knowledge. The company has developed solutions for the energy industry, including power production optimization. Accurate predictions help companies better plan power plant unit operations and minimize spinning reserves. That reduces the operation cost and the carbon emissions caused by running unnecessary power generation units. By accurately forecasting power demand, companies can determine when to increase or decrease power generation to meet the demand without running too many power plants. This helps them save money on power generation and reduce the number of emissions caused by running these extra plants. Furthermore, when companies can accurately predict the electricity demand, they can purchase electricity from the grid when cheaper, which also helps reduce operational costs. Additionally, the reduction in the amount of power generation units used results in fewer emissions being released into the atmosphere, which is beneficial for the environment.

Having accurate weather predictions is also very important. Most companies use numerical methods like numerical optimization to improve power plant operation. But as the number of renewable generation units increases, the numerical calculations become more complex with many more decision variables, often greatly affected by the weather. If utilities want to solve those problems in real-time, numerical optimization could be improved, especially when there is high uncertainty in the power sources.

Harnessing Wastewater Treatment for Clean and Sustainable Water

The rising demand for efficient wastewater treatment has heightened the focus on minimizing chemical use and contaminants. As industries, municipalities, and agricultural sectors produce large volumes of wastewater, there is a clear move toward sustainable treatment methods that reduce reliance on harmful chemicals while ensuring high water quality. By adopting advanced technologies, optimizing existing processes, and incorporating nature-based solutions, treatment facilities can deliver cleaner water and significantly lower their environmental footprint. The systems use fine membranes to separate impurities, particles, and microorganisms from water, producing a cleaner effluent. These methods are particularly effective in industries where high-quality water reuse is essential, such as food processing or semiconductor manufacturing. Biological treatment methods play a significant role in reducing chemical usage. The biological processes can effectively replace or minimize chemical coagulants and disinfectants, leading to lower chemical input and a more sustainable treatment approach. Chemical reduction in wastewater treatment can use advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). The methods employ highly reactive oxidizing agents, such as hydroxyl radicals, generated using ozone, hydrogen peroxide, or ultraviolet light to break down complex organic pollutants and contaminants. RHM International is making significant contributions to this field by providing cutting-edge AOP-based solutions that enhance wastewater treatment efficiency. The company was recently awarded the Top High Voltage Power Grid Equipment Manufacturer by Utilities Tech Outlook for its pioneering work in high voltage grid technologies and its role in advancing the future of power infrastructure. Source control is another critical strategy in reducing contaminants at the wastewater treatment stage. Preventing pollutants from entering the wastewater stream in the first place minimizes the need for extensive chemical treatments later. It involves industries adopting cleaner production methods, using biodegradable or less toxic materials, and implementing stringent waste segregation practices. For example, capturing heavy metals or hazardous chemicals at their source through specialized treatment systems reduces the burden on central wastewater facilities, resulting in cleaner and less chemically intensive treatment processes.  Natural treatment systems offer a sustainable alternative to chemical-intensive processes. The systems use plants, soil, and microorganisms to filter and degrade pollutants in wastewater. Constructed wetlands are particularly effective in removing nutrients, heavy metals, and organic contaminants while providing additional ecological benefits, such as habitat creation and carbon sequestration. These methods require less energy and chemicals, making them ideal for rural areas, small communities, or facilities seeking eco-friendly treatment.  Governments and environmental agencies are implementing stricter discharge standards, incentivizing facilities to adopt cleaner technologies and practices. Reducing chemicals and contaminants in wastewater treatment is a multifaceted effort that involves leveraging advanced technologies, optimizing biological and natural processes, and promoting source control. By combining these approaches with real-time monitoring and robust regulatory support, wastewater treatment facilities can achieve cleaner water outputs while minimizing environmental harm. ...Read more
