Located in the homonymous municipality in Bergamo city, Montello S.p.A is ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 18001, ISO 22000 and ISO 50001 certified. The company focuses on two areas. First is the treatment, recovery, and recycling of 765,000 tons/year of organic waste, including the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), from separate urban collection. Second is the sorting, recovering and recycling of 350,000 tons/year of post-consumer plastic packaging waste from separated urban collection as well.

“In both sectors (recovery and recycling of plastic and organic waste), Montello utilizes its own dedicated laboratories and control rooms to control its production processes and the quality of the recovered products with respect to the appliable national and European regulations,” says Roberto Sancinelli, the President at Montello.

Regarding plastic packaging waste, thanks to the technologies adopted and its know-how, the company recycles even fractions of waste that are more difficult to recycle. It already exceeds the minimum recycling target of 65% set by European legislation at 2035. The integrated process first separates the different types of plastic by polymer (PET, HDPE, LDPE, PP and mix polyolefin) and by colour, which are then treated to produce secondary raw materials in the form of flakes and granules.
In summary, 75% of input plastic waste is recovered/recycled and transformed into secondary raw materials, while the remaining 25% is recovered as Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF), and it is sent to cement plants and energy recovery plants.

With regards to organic waste, Montello’s adopted process calls for the first phase of anaerobic treatment generating biogas, which produces biomethane used as an automotive advanced biofuel—recovering also the Carbon Dioxide, suitable to be reused in industrial production cycles, including food applications. It also has a second aerobic treatment phase from digestate sludge, with the production of high-quality organic fertilizer.

Even the organic waste recycling process adopted by Montello, which annually recovers and recycles over 765,000 tons of organic waste from the separate urban collection, already exceeds the European target, with an actual recovery performance exceeding 90%.

Sancinelli hopes that Europe will give clear directives for using waste as a substitute for raw fossil materials. In this way, competitiveness and technological progress will be stimulated, and citizens will benefit from paying less the waste tariff

Customers who purchase the secondary raw materials produced by Montello can benefit from their reduced environmental impact (Carbon footprint), reducing the equivalent CO2 emissions in the production of products manufactured with these secondary raw materials.

Sancinelli hopes that Europe will give clear directives for using waste as a substitute for raw fossil materials. In this way, competitiveness and technological progress will be stimulated, and citizens will benefit from paying less the waste tariff.
