Enersponse: Automating DER’s for Grid Stability and Decarbonization

The fluctuating transmission, distribution, and capacity charges have made the energy market quite volatile and prompted the need for more accessible grid reliability, including demand response programs. These plans help reduce energy costs and provide some companies and multifamily housing communities with the opportunity to receive financial incentives and possibly even rebates if they reduce consumption during peak load times. The programs also improve grid reliability by reducing stress on energy transition and distribution systems while decreasing wholesale prices with efficient means for electricity generation like renewable resources. However, most businesses lack the expertise to leverage these programs without putting undue stress on their operations.

To this end, Enersponse connects energy users and providers through its namesake platform to ensure the effective management of energy. The company delivers DR resources to utility customers by implementing fully-automated DR measures. Enersponse enrolls energy users in programs that best fit their sites, simplifying the process of participating in demand response events to boost incentives and rebates.

Enersponse’s intelligent automation-powered distributed energy resource platform is connected to hundreds of power generators across North America, all dispatchable to clients existing control or building systems. The platform monitors weather patterns, system outages, and energy pricing fluctuations and syncs this data with pre-determined client preferences to adjust in real-time without any human intervention.

Utility companies initiate a DR event to shed the grid load whenever energy demand is higher than the supply. Enersponse receives this signal from utility companies and through the Auto-DR platform, automatically dispatches numerous signals to the client’s building or energy management systems. These systems then initiate pre-set energy reduction measures, including slight adjustments of HVAC setpoints, dimming or turning off specified lighting, engaging battery storage systems, and shutting down heavy machinery.
The clients receive financial rewards for saving energy. The company works closely with building or energy management system companies to ensure that industrial and commercial clients incorporate the right equipment and technology into their facilities to reduce the energy consumed during a DR event.

To maximize savings for clients, the platform takes real-time or previous day’s data regarding price signals and converts it into actionable insights. Its Price Response program not only looks for price spikes but predicts those spikes to trigger energy-saving measures in real-time at energy providers’ and users’ locations. As a result, end users don’t get slapped with higher electricity bills.

The dynamic nature of triggering financial savings and helping clients achieve environmental targets sets us apart from typical energy savings systems and companies

Enersponse enables energy users to set a price trigger and signals their energy management systems to respond automatically to reduce energy consumption when the wholesale price of electricity exceeds the set price. The client customizes these Price Response events within the platform depending on their needs, including the length of each event, number of events per hour and per day, and indications of different severity levels based on different price triggers.

Enersponse also offers a Clean Response program that helps curb reliance on fossil fuels, enabling energy companies to meet their sustainability and ESG goals. It automates the reduction of energy consumption when the majority of power is generated from non-renewable resources like gas or coal. The Clean Response monitors the CO2 make-up of the grid in real-time and alerts clients whenever the CO2 percentage is high. Consequently, Enersponse matches clients’ flexible loads with intelligent automation to prevent carbon-intensive energy utilization based on pre-determined specifications.

“The dynamic nature of triggering financial savings and helping clients achieve environmental targets sets us apart from typical energy savings systems and companies,” says James McPhail, CEO of Enersponse.

A one-stop-shop solution for consolidating all energy conservation programs, Enersponse continues to provide clients with flexible, convenient, and risk-free opportunities to reduce electricity costs while supporting grid sustainability and decarbonization.
