The sector is tasked with providing an essential service to the population and has no choice but to guarantee sustainable wastewater treatment. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has led utilities to implement new processes and methods of managing treatment infrastructures with their success in this radical transition, hinged mainly on their degree of technological maturity prior to the crisis. With rapid urbanisation, organisations and systems that operate in the wastewater treatment industry have been dependent on Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems to monitor some parts of the water distributions systems, yet the practical limitation of its installation points has restricted its use. However, because the rising wastewater levels and the operational condition of the system need to be controlled accurately, it is imperative to find an efficient way to constantly monitor the nodes of the system and adjust the parameters, including the quantities used in the chemical treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to use IoT technologies to sense and control equipment to help treatment plants monitor sewage treatment process parameters. IoT in water treatment uses the concept of smart sensors installed at various points in the water system to collect data such as water quality, temperature changes, pressure changes, water leak detection, and chemical leakage detection to send it back to the monitoring systems.In its simplest form, IoT devices in wastewater treatment track the quality, pressure, and temperature of the water. A sensor solution will measure liquid flow and can be used by a water utility company to track the flow across the whole treatment plant. Furthermore, IoT devices can also play a role in leak detection and send an immediate alert to a remote dashboard. By detecting residual chemicals after treatment, managers can use them to calculate the efficacy of the selected treatment process. The project has a significant effect on improving regional water environment quality, and its environmental benefits are enormous.
